Packing Your Car for Winter Trips

Packing Your Car for Winter Trips

Whether you live in an area where it snows, or the roads get icy, planning a trip to areas where road conditions may get treacherous due to winter conditions, or just want to be prepared when in your vehicle, there are actions you can take to ensure survival and safety.

First, you need to keep an eye on weather alerts.  Be sure you are informed before traveling of storm watches (a storm is likely), advisories (winter conditions may be hazardous), or warnings (take action immediately), and plan your trip accordingly.

Make sure your cell phone is charged so you can call for help in case of an emergency.  It is a good idea to tell someone responsible the route you are taking and expected time of arrival because you never know what could happen.

Make sure your vehicle is in good working condition and the tires have adequate air pressure.  Always drive safely and lower your speed whenever possible.

Items to include in your vehicle during the winter months include:

  • Water
  • Sweet beverages but avoid caffeine or alcohol
  • High calorie foods
  • Flashlights
  • First aid kit
  • Blankets
  • Tire chains or sand bags for traction

It is important to remember extreme cold conditions can cause frostbite or hypothermia.  Be sure to include clothing proper for cold, wet, or windy conditions.  Dress is layers when possible.  Avoid becoming over-exhausted and take short breaks whenever possible.

Being prepared can help insure you have a safe and enjoyable winter outing.
